If you know you cannot file your return by the due date, you should file Form 4868A, Application for Extension of Time to File Alabama Income Tax Return.
Except in cases where taxpayers are abroad, no extension will be granted for more than 6 months. An extension, if granted, will be for a period of 4 months. Only in exceptional cases and where conditions set forth on application forms are met will a second extension for an additional 2 months be granted. Applications for extension must be on prescribed forms, and submitted in time for consideration by the Alabama Department of Revenue before the due date of the return. An approved extension means only that you will not be assessed a penalty for failure to timely file a return. Interest is due on any additional tax not paid by the original due date. Other penalties such as the underpayment due to negligence and the underpayment due to fraud will be assessed, if applicable, even if you have an approved extension. Note: The Department will not accept Federal Form 4868 “Automatic Extension of Time to File Your Federal Return” in lieu of Alabama Form 4868A “Application for Extension of Time to File Your Alabama Return.”
